Very ripe, dark berry aromas come forward first; dark raspberries, fragrant boysenberries, warm ripe berries-in-the-briars aromas. These are supported by a few high notes of cedar, brown cigar-tobacco, and a subtle wafts of anise. On the palate, the wine is bright and fresh with black cherry/raspberry sirup flavors, and a dense, soft, mouth-coating texture carries the wine through the mid-palate. The finish is equally rich, with a few light notes of chocolate and vanilla adding layers of complexity to the berry/black fruit flavors. Though unmistakably Stags Leap District in its texture, this wine’s structure also displays the intense color, aroma, and flavor density which is appropriately derived from its steep, rocky hillside origins.
