The Best Pomerol You've Never Heard Of

There is a small plot of land in Pomerol — just over three acres — tucked between two of the most revered addresses in all of Bordeaux: Petrus and Lafleur-Petrus. The wine produced from this plot is almost entirely unknown outside collector circles, yet wine critic Jane Anson called it "the best Pomerol estate you've never heard of."

That estate is Château Lafleur Saint-Jean.

Over the following century, the Janoueix name became synonymous with some of the finest estates in Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. Lafleur Saint-Jean, with its first vintage in 1994, was a quiet addition to that legacy — three parcels on the high plateau of Pomerol, maintained with obsessive care and producing a wine that is fully realizing its extraordinary address.

The three plots that make up Lafleur Saint-Jean sit directly on the high plateau of Pomerol, the appellation's most coveted ground. Pomerol has no official classification, but the plateau — shared with Petrus, Lafleur, and Lafleur-Petrus — represents the pinnacle of the appellation's terroir. Beneath the surface lies a deep layer of red gravel over a clay subsoil, a combination that provides both excellent drainage and moisture retention. Vine age averages 40 years.

The entire 1.2 hectares is maintained like a garden. Around 20 manual passes are required each year between pruning and harvest — an extraordinary level of attention for such a small property.

At Lafleur Saint-Jean, nothing is mechanized, nothing is filtered. The four small stainless-steel tanks in the vat room are thermo-regulated and shaped specifically to encourage optimal maceration between juice and marc. Aging takes place in 100% new French oak barrels from the prestigious cooper Darnajou — a choice usually reserved for estates with much greater public profiles. The wine is bottled at the property, unfiltered.

The result is a wine that carries all the silky power associated with the plateau of Pomerol, yet remains entirely under the radar. Where Petrus commands four-figure prices and Lafleur is nearly impossible to source, Lafleur Saint-Jean offers access to one of the great Pomerol terroirs at a fraction of the cost.

Château Lafleur Saint-Jean (Current Vintage), Pomerol

From three plots situated between Petrus and Lafleur-Petrus on the highest ground in Pomerol. The wine opens with a clean garnet core and a complex bouquet of cherry, leather, dark currants, raspberries, roses, wild thyme, and bay leaf, with a distinctive ferric note. On the palate it is dry and silky, with fully intense flavors and fine, moderate tannins. Bottled without filtration.
